today's readings: Numbers 26:52-28:15, Luke 3:1-22, Psalm 61:1-8, Proverbs 11:16-17
John was not exactly a charmer. he called the religious leaders who came out to see him a "brood of vipers". not exactly Joel Osteen.
and he didn't mince words when publicly criticized Herod for marrying his brother's wife. which got him arrested.
but there must have been something about him... because Herod, even though he was publicly shamed by him, kept bringing him in to talk to him. I guess there is something about holiness and truth that is attractive, even when it's not dressed nicely.
but God is calling us to be gentle and kind and loving and peaceful. these are the fruits of His spirit... which means that when He is in our lives, we will naturally become more of these things. maybe the time John lived in called for him to be this way. but today, we are called to gentleness and kindness.
God, please help me to be holy AND gentle and kind...

We could all learn so much from John. In today's world so many of us put our personal world in front of Christ whom we are supposed to be leading others to find. We need to humble ourselves and take our eyes off of self and bow down at the foot of the cross.
