a sword will pierce your heart

today's readings: Numbers 24:1-25:18, Luke 2:1-35, Psalm 59:1-17, Proverbs 11:14

so in the middle of the happy occasion of Jesus being circumcised and Simeon blessing Him and Mary and Joseph, Simeon says something odd. "and a sword will pierce your heart", he says to Mary. Mary was like "what the?? why you gotta be like that??"

ok, maybe she didn't say that. maybe she pondered these things in her heart. but really, Simeon?

but he did say that. and it turned out to be a good thing. pain along the way, but good in the end.

pain is good for us, as long as we allow it to deepen us. if we grow bitter and angry, if we turn our backs on God and refuse to grow, then it doesn't help us. but as long as we stay humble and seek His will for our lives, then pain makes us deeper. it "hollows us out" so that we become bigger containers to put more joy, more love in.

God please keep me close to you when the pain comes... so I can become a worthy vessel.
