Today we read these verses in the One Year Bible:
1 Kings 22:1-53
Acts 13:16-41
Psalm 138:1-8
Proverbs 17:17-18
Let's look at 1 Kings. We see here an example of sarcasm in the Bible! The king wants to go attack this other kingdom and take some of their land. He asks his prophets and they all say "Do it! You'll win for sure!" But the king doesn't believe them. He calls Micaiah, who is an actual prophet and really does ask God what will happen. When Micaiah comes before the king, the king asks if he should attack or not. Micaiah sarcastically says, "Oh YEAH. Go attack! YoU'lL WiN fOr SuRe!!" (In case you haven't seen it before, that's the sarcasm font). And the king says, "Stop being sarcastic and tell me the truth." And Micaiah says, "Uh... you're gonna lose. And you're gonna lose huge." (This is the Jeff Reedy translation, but if you check your Bible you'll see I captured the gist of the story).
They say that sarcasm is a sign of high intelligence. But we just need to keep in mind that there is a time for sarcasm and a time to tell the truth without irony, like Micaiah did today. If you're not sure which is which, ask for wisdom.
God, thanks for showing us that there is a time for sarcasm.
