Honest Work: One Year Bible Reading for June 15

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

1 Kings 14:1-15:24
Acts 10:1-23
Psalm 133:1-3
Proverbs 17:7-8

Let's look at the Proverb. It says that people who give bribes think they will meet "success at every turn." When you read the book of proverbs, it has some tough things to say about giving and taking bribes. The underlying message is this: just do good work. Don't accept bribes to do for one person what you don't do for everyone. Now, it's OK to tip people as a thank you for their hard work (though that's primarily an American practice). But BRIBING people to do something dishonest is strongly frowned on by the writer of the book of Proverbs.

Like Jesus said about letting your yes be yes and your no, no.... let's just do our work honestly and be happy that God allows us to do good work for our living. After all, that's what Solomon, one of the (if not THE) wisest men who ever lived, said is important in life - to do your work and do it well.

God, thanks for teaching us to do honest work.
