Break the Cycle: One Year Bible Reading for June 16

Today we read in the following verses from the One Year Bible:

1 Kings 15:25-17:24
Acts 10:24-48
Psalm 134:1-3
Proverbs 17:9-11

Let's look at 1 Kings. It starts off tame enough... we're told that King Nadab did evil in the eyes of God. But look closely. The only thing we're told is that he did just like his father had. And that, in his case, was the problem.

Now, some of us have wonderful mothers and fathers who teach us to do good with our lives. But some of us have mothers and/or fathers who do bad things - including abusing their kids (aka us!). And we don't want to do like Nadab and follow in those footsteps, do we?

Sometimes it's hard to KNOW if what you're doing is abusive or wrong. If it's what you grew up with, it might seem right to you? If you wonder, try visiting this site which gives you tools to identify abuse in your family and learn how to break the cycle.

But let's be sure to carry on the good that our parents taught us, while breaking the cycle of bad habits, abuse, and vices that were passed down to us from previous generations. Let's not be like Nadab.

God, thanks for teaching us to break bad cycles and maintain good habits.
