Today we read from the One Year Bible in these verses:
2 Samuel 17:1-29
John 19:23-42
Psalm 119:129-152
Proverbs 16:12-13
Let's look at John. We come to a very unusual part of the story of Jesus's passion. He's on the cross, and John says, "so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, 'I am thirsty.'" That seems like a throwaway verse, right? I mean, maybe showing us that Jesus was human and suffering on the cross?
What if I told you that Jesus saying "I'm thirsty" and what happened next is how it all works. How Jesus dying on the cross 2000 years ago saves you from your sins today in 2022 and allows you to go to heaven instead of hell?
Seems impossible, right? Well, The Fourth Cup by Scott Hahn explains how this works. I highly recommend reading the actual book, but you can get the idea of it here. I always wondered how it worked - how Jesus dying on the cross saved me. I mean, I believed that it did. I just never knew HOW.
I STILL don't know how Jesus multiplied the loaves and fish. Did He just keep reaching in a basket and pulling out more, or did He take a loaf and tear it apart but both halves were as big (or bigger) than the original loaf? I wish I knew how THAT happened.
But this is FAR more important. This (The Fourth Cup) is why you and I get to go to heaven. Check it out.
God, thanks for taking something so small and seemingly unimportant and changing the universe with it.
