Awaken the Dawn!: One Year Bible Reading for May 12

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

1 Samuel 12:1-13:23
John 7:1-30
Psalm 108:1-13
Proverbs 15:4

Let's look at the Psalm. David says, "Wake up, harp and lyre - let's awaken the dawn!" So basically he says "I'm gonna rock on this guitar and get the day started right!" And the way he is gonna start the day is by praising God.

What time of the day do you spend with God? Now, before we start picking, we should remember that the Bible tells us to "pray without ceasing". (1 Thess 5:16) So we should really be spending ALL day with God. But let me explain something. It's kind of like "If God is everywhere (omnipresent) then how was Jesus any different than a tree? How is the Eucharist any different than a hamburger? Isn't God in both?"

The answer to THAT question is yes, God is present in the tree, in Jesus, in the Eucharist, and in the hamburger. But He is more FULLY present in Jesus (and the Eucharist) than He is in the tree or the burger.

And when we spend time with God, we're more FULLY in His presence than we are while driving or doing the laundry or talking to a friend. He is present for all of those things. But we're focusing on Him more when we "spend time with God." Kind of like if you're married - you spend all day with your spouse... but you find time to "be alone" with your spouse and have "quality time" with one another.

So what time works for you? Here is a website that talks about seven ways we can learn to spend time with God. It might have some ideas for you.

As for me, I am most awake and alive at the end of the day, before bed. So I awaken the dawn too - but the dawn is late night for me. I stay up all night, and usually go to bed when the sun is coming up. What works for you?

God, thanks for teaching us to spend all day with You - and to focus on You during the best time we can find.
