Reversing the Downward Spiral: One Year Bible Reading for April 14

Today we're reading these verses in the One Year Bible:

Joshua 9:3-10:43
Luke 16:19-17:10
Psalm 83:1-18
Proverbs 13:4

Let's look at the proverb. It's very simple, but it opens up something REALLY PROFOUND. It says, "A sluggard's appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied."

This, in a very small nutshell, points to the downward spiral of depression.

If you:

1 don't exercise

2 sit and watch TV all day (or scroll online all day)

3 eat junk food (and only junk food/ empty calories like chips and soda)

4 get depressed

then you will continue to not exercise, watch TV all day, eat junk food, and get even more depressed. Which will cause you to even MORE not exercise, watch TV all day, eat junk food, and get yet more depressed. Look at the proverb: the sluggard (which is the person sitting on their couch all day watching TV or scrolling online, not exercising, and eating junk food) is never filled. You will continue trying to stuff your face with more and more empty calories, and get more and more out of shape and depressed. How many Americans are doing this RIGHT NOW?

Now, think about the upward spiral:

1 exercise daily

2 limit your TV/internet usage (like while you're on the treadmill!)

3 eat healthy food (here is a website with a list of superfoods. Add them to your diet!)

4 spiral up! more energy! better sleep! better attitude! more motivation to work out!

It's almost like the writer of proverbs knew what he was talking about.

God, thanks for teaching us how to spiral up.
