Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:
Deuteronomy 7:1-8:20
Luke 7:36-8:3
Psalm 69:1-18
Proverbs 12:1
Let's look at Luke. Jesus is eating at a friend's house, and a notoriously sinful woman comes in and starts washing Jesus's feet with her hair. Now, if you grew up hearing this story, it probably doesn't shock you. But think about it. This holy man, whom many claim is the holy messiah that they'd been waiting for, is sitting in your home. Suddenly a woman from town who has a reputation for not being a good person starts washing His feet with her hair. That's freaky, to begin with. But it also makes you doubt the messiah, right? Because if He was the messiah, He would know what kind of woman she was, and would NOT associate with her.
But the reason we love this story is because if we are all VERY honest with ourselves, we know that WE are that woman. We are weeping from our sins, and we know we don't deserve to be given eternal life. But we see Jesus forgive her. We see, in this story, Jesus forgiving the deep down part of ourselves that we're even ashamed to admit to ourselves. We see that God Himself really does love us, and really does forgive us for the wrong we've done, and heals us so we can spend eternity with Him.
That's why we love that story.
God, thanks for teaching us how You REALLY feel about us.
