No Answer: One Year Bible Reading for March 4

Today we read the following verses in the One Year Bible:

Numbers 2:1-3:51
Mark 11:27-12:17
Psalm 47:1-9
Proverbs 10:24-25

Let's look at Mark. The Pharisees come to Jesus and demand to know by what authority He's doing His work. They don't really want to know the answer (that's a key point to consider), but rather are simply trying to trap Him. He refuses to be trapped, and flips the trap back at them. They don't realize they're trying to argue with Reason itself. They're trying to bandy words with The Word.

Notice that Jesus gives us an example here of not replying. While it's true that we are always to be ready to give "a reason for the hope that is within us", keep in mind that not everyone deserves an answer just because they ask you a question. Sometimes they're trying to trap you. Or just trying to prove a point. Or trying to get information from you for a bad reason. When Pilate asked Jesus "What is truth?", He didn't give him a verbal reply. Jesus said, "Don't cast your pearls before swine." Sometimes the best answer is no words at all. Just be kind and loving, and let them figure it out themselves.

God, thanks for teaching us that we don't always need to answer every question.
