Today we read from the following verses in the One Year Bible:
Numbers 19:1-20:29
Luke 1:1-25
Psalm 56:1-13
Proverbs 11:8
Let's look at Luke 1. An angel comes to Zechariah and tells him that he's going to have a very important son. And Zechariah is a little dubious because both he and his wife are very old. So he asks the angel, Gabriel, for a sign that this is REALLY going to happen. Well, Gabriel is displeased by this request and tells Zechariah that he will be mute until his son is born because he didn't believe him.
Now, that's a funny story. But let's compare it to when Jesus was amazed. Jesus told a centurion that He would come to his house and heal his servant, and the centurion says, "That's OK. Just say the word and it'll happen." And Jesus was shocked at the man's faith.
So here's our lesson. God wants us to believe Him. To trust Him. It displeases Him when we doubt Him (though it's natural), and it amazes and pleases Him when we have faith. If you find yourself doubting today, ask Him to grow your faith. He will.
God, thanks for teaching us not to tick off angels.
