Not Our Home: The One Year Bible Reading for February 27

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from these verses:

Leviticus 20:22-22:16
Mark 9:1-29
Psalm 43:1-5
Proverbs 10:18

Let's look at Mark 9. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain and is transfigured. His clothes become whiter than humans can possibly make them. And Peter is so overcome with awe and fear that he says, "Let's make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah!" And, just a quick aside, here is a good argument for the communion of saints if you're ever looking for one. Moses and Elijah appear to Jesus and encourage Him for His upcoming work. That's EXACTLY what asking for the prayers of saints looks like.

But back to Peter. He wants to LIVE on the mountain top. He sees how amazing it is up there, with Jesus in His super whites, and with Moses and Elijah back from heaven, and is like "Wow. Let's never leave."

But there is work to do. All of them, Jesus, Peter, James, and John will go share the good news of eternal life with people all over the world, and all of them will be put to death for it. (You might think John isn't put to death for it, but he actually was - he was boiled in oil. It's not his fault that he survived his execution (without being harmed!) and then was exiled to Patmos where he wrote a few more books of the Bible).

This world isn't our final destination. In this world, we WILL have trouble. Don't let the events in Ukraine trouble you (though we SHOULD be praying for them, and for peace). God has already won the victory over evil. And we're marching through this life, doing good and sharing love and good news, until the time comes for us to go to our ACTUAL home - with Jesus in heaven.

God, thanks for reminding us that we're just passing through (like those guys in the pic above).
