St Giuseppe Moscati: A Very Ordinary Saint

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about a very ordinary man in many ways. His name is St Giuseppe Moscati. He lived near Naples, Italy in the first part of the 20th century. He was a doctor and professor.

He helped the poor and made sure that everyone got help even if they couldn't afford it. His gentle but firm faith led many people back to the church. He didn't perform any miracles and he wasn't martyred. He didn't begin any new religious orders. He was an ordinary person, like you and me. He passed away in between meeting with patients at his office. You can read more about him here.

This is kind of reassuring, isn't it? For the last several months we've been reading about amazing, remarkable, superhero type saints. Today we have an ordinary man doing ordinary work, with the kind of love that Mother Teresa says we should do everything with. And because he did what you and I do, but did it with great love, he's now a saint in the church.

God, help us to do our ordinary things with extraordinary love. St Giuseppe Moscati, pray for us.
