St Patrick: He Loved the Bible

Today, as we all know, is St Patrick's day. So the reading from the book In Caelo et in Terra is all about this remarkable saint.

He was born in England, but was abducted by slavers and sold in Ireland. At the time, he was not interested in religion. But during his lonely and suffering time in Ireland, he found strength and comfort in Jesus. When he escaped from the slavers and returned to England, he felt God calling him to do two things. To become a priest, and to return to Ireland. He did both of those things and converted so many Irish people to Christianity that the island became known as the "isle of saints and scholars." You can read more about him here.

But one thing that you might not know is that St Patrick had a deep and abiding love of the Bible. He spent many hours in contemplative prayer, reading the Bible and allowing God to speak to him through it. His writings and his speech were always replete with Biblical references.

Have you spent time in the Bible lately? Have you opened your heart to allow God to speak to you through it? Consider reading it each day, which you can do at this link.

God, thanks for giving us the wonderful gift of this amazing priest, who loved Your Bible. St Patrick, pray for us.
