St Louise de Marillac: Not Either/Or but Both/And

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Louise de Marillac. She never knew her mom because her parents weren't married and she was raised by her dad. She wanted to become a nun, but the convent did not accept her, and she was subsequently married. She still wanted very much to be a nun, though. God gave her a vision in which He told her she would be able to take vows "in due time," which is the Aslan was of saying "soon."

Shortly thereafter her husband passed away and she became a nun. She had St Francis de Sales as her spiritual director for awhile, and then St Vincent de Paul after that! Pretty impressive mentors! They taught her to take care of the poor, which she did for the rest of her life. You can read more about her here.

If God has given you a deep desire for something, trust Him. He won't let your desire go unfulfilled. Just be patient, like St Louise de Marillac was, and you won't have to decide either/or.... because God delights in giving us both/and.

God, thanks for the great example of this woman who longed to be closer to You all of her life. St Louise de Marillac, pray for us.
