St Colette: Dealing with Disappointment

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Colette. She wanted to become a religious sister, but things didn't work out with the Poor Clares or with the other order she tried to join. So she just lived in a room attached to a church and prayed all the time. Eventually she was allowed to join the Poor Clares, and she founded several monasteries in her lifetime. You can read more about her at this link.

Sometimes when we start doing what God calls us to, we get disappointed in the way things work out. Maybe we thought He was going to give us a certain job, and it falls through. Maybe we feel called to raise children, but we find ourselves childless year after year. Perhaps we feel called to marriage, but one relationship after another dissolves before it develops into a permanent love. Whatever the case, God calls us to persevere. To keep going, knowing that He doesn't promise us that everything is going to work out the way we expect - but that He will fulfill all of our desires, either in this life, or in the next. I promise that you will not ultimately be disappointed.

God, thanks for giving us this saint as a reminder not to give up when we're disappointed. St Colette, pray for us.
