above the ordinary

Today we read from the One Year Bible in Acts 5:1-42. Peter and the other disciples are healing people right and left, and many are becoming Christians because of this.

Which is great, and I'm sure those people were happy to be healed. But they did get sick and die again after that. Our health is not something that's going to last forever.

Our pleasures won't either. And that's what we spend much of our time focusing on, isn't it? The next meal or movie or sexual encounter or sports event that will bring us pleasure? Nothing wrong with pleasure.... but if it's our main focus, that leaves us pretty shallow, doesn't it?

Let's try to make our lives a little deeper today. To find something that we can do that will make a difference in someone's life. Something that will impact eternity, and not just make us feel good. How can you make that difference today?

God, thanks for reminding us to live above the ordinary. Please show us how to do that.
