when truth sets you free
Today in the One Year Bible, Jesus utters a few words that are so packed with meaning, we could contemplate them all day and not run out of new gems of wisdom. The reading is from John 8:31-59. He says, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
We all know about people who are caught up in a lie, and when they find out the truth, they are able to go and live happy free lives. Men who were falsely imprisoned but a DNA test gives them the truth that literally sets them free from behind bars. Alcoholics who learn the truths of AA and are able to put their addiction to drink behind them to live healthy lives.
But we all live imprisoned to other things. Fears. Hatreds. Anxiety. Grudges. Feelings of inadequacy. Self loathing. Depression.
And learning the truth about the matter sets us free from those things. We don't have to be afraid, because we can do all things in His strength. We must let go of our hate and grudges if we want to be truly healthy. We should be anxious for nothing, but in everything talk to God about it instead. We are adequate for whatever we face, because God will work everything for our good. We can learn to stop hating ourselves and love ourselves instead, as we experience His love, and love other people. He can bring us up out of depression when we learn the truth about exercise, brain chemistry, endorphins, and other healthy treatments that free us from the darkness that so easily enfolds us.
And, of course, the Truth that sets us ultimately free is Jesus Himself. He IS the way, the truth, and the life. When we know Him, He sets us free from sin and death, and brings us life - abundant life.
God, thanks for giving us the truth that sets us free.
