not of this world
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from John 18:25-19:22. Jesus tells Pilate that His kingdom is not of this world, and that's why His disciples aren't fighting to free Him.
That tells us something today, too. His kingdom is still not of this world. That's why there are so many martyrs dying all over the world today. Don't you think He could protect His followers? But He allows us to be martyred - the greatest honor a Christian can experience.
Does this mean we shouldn't defend ourselves or the church? No, we're called to both. Jesus did say to buy a sword. He does want us to defend the church against those who wish to destroy it.
But we should also expect there to be martyrs. Don't be surprised when the world hates you - and when it kills you. Pray for those who face this final and supreme test - that they'll be strengthened.
God, thank You for letting us know that Your kingdom isn't of this world. And that we should expect to be hated. But that we can take heart, because You have overcome the world.
