you said it
Today in the One Year Bible, Jesus says something curious. The reading is from Luke 22:54-23:12. The high priest asks Jesus if He is the Son of God. He replies, "You have said so."
He uses the same phrase when Judas asks if he's the one who will betray Him. And then Pilate asks if He is the King of the Jews, and He replies, "You have said it."
Commentators have different thoughts on the reason Jesus answers this way. And there is probably more to it than we realize... it's worth meditating on. But one thing to realize is that words bring about a reality when they're spoken. Like when a police officer says, "You're under arrest." Or when the preacher says, "I now pronounce you man and wife." The arrest, and the marriage, become reality when the person in that office says it.
In the same way, the historical fact of Jesus being the Son of God is being pronounced as a reality by the high priest. And remember that Jesus told the people of His time that what the high priest says is binding. He makes things true by saying it. So when they say that Jesus's blood will be on them and their children, it brought about a profound reality.
What profound reality do you need to happen in your life today? Speaking the words of repentance when we turn from our sins brings about a huge spiritual change in our lives. And we're told that when we say, "Jesus is Lord," we only do so by the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
So speak! And you will change your reality. Ask for His help, and you will receive it.
God, thanks for making reality change according to our words. Help us choose them wisely.
ps the character in the gif above just happens to be named Jesus, from the Big Lebowski.
