seems almost too simple

Today we read from Matthew 6:25-7:14 in the One Year Bible. Jesus is giving us the sermon on the mount, one of His greatest teaching moments. If you study the life of Jesus and compare it to the life of Moses (which is VERY much worth doing), you see that the same way that Moses brought the ten commandments down from Mt Sinai, Jesus taught the sermon on the mount after spending time in prayer on a mountain. So what Jesus says in this sermon is very important and central to His will for mankind.

And right here in the middle of the sermon where He's telling us some of the most important lessons we need to learn as humans, He says, "Don't worry about tomorrow. Don't fret about what you're going to eat, or drink, or wear. God will take care of you."

That's huge, right? He is telling us not to worry. Doesn't that strike you as a little odd? Shouldn't He be telling us what good things we should do? What acts of righteousness we should accomplish? What horrible sins we should avoid?

Instead, He shows how much He loves us. Instead of giving us a list of do's and don't's.... He says, "Don't worry. God will take care of you. He loves you."

If that lesson is so important that He'd put it in His great big sermon, the longest He is recorded saying... well, I think we better take it to heart.

God, thank You for caring about us so much that you tell us not to worry. Thank You for being a God we can trust.
