of all the things that God could be

Jesus talks to us about His relationship with God the Father today in our reading from the One Year Bible. The reading is from John 17:1-26.

Jesus talks about how He's praying for us, His followers, to love one another the way that the Father loved Him before the creation of the world. That we would be one, as He and the Father are one.

And it really makes you take a step back and appreciate who God is. As the creator of the universe, more powerful than we can imagine, more intelligent than we can fathom, He could be many things. He could be tired of us. Mad at us. Bored with us. Fed up with us. I mean, even on the best days, I sometimes get tired of how selfish and mean and unpleasant we humans can be to each other. And so many of us treat God with contempt, blaspheming His name and making fun of those who follow Him.

But He is love. He is waiting patiently for us to come to Him. To learn to love the way that He does. To take His love into our hearts and then learn to give it away freely to those around us, the way He does.

Of all the things God could be, He is love. That's something to be grateful for.

God, thank You for loving us. Please help us to learn to love like You do.
