not so He learns your sins
St John Chrysostom today in A Year with the Church Fathers teaches us that God doesn't ask us to confess our sins so that He can find out what they are and punish us for them.
Instead, he says, God wants us to confess our sins so that we can find out how great His mercy and grace are. When we face our sins head on, and then we're forgiven, we realize that there is no sin so great that God isn't able to forgive it in His mercy and grace. (Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, the unpardonable sin, is not something that the person committing it would confess or repent of.)
So confess your sins. If we do, He is faithful and just to forgive them. And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Who wouldn't want that?
God, thanks for so great a mercy. Please help us to trust in it, and to come to You with all of our sins.
