tuning in to God's frequency
St John Chrysostom talks to us today about being genuinely sorry for our sins. He says that true tears are what demonstrate that we are truly sorry, but as you probably know, not everyone cries when they're sorry. Some people just feel bad about what they've done, and confess it.
However our emotions are involved, confessing our sins is one of the best ways to get in touch with God. He is speaking to us all the time, but we don't have "ears to hear" because we've deafened ourselves with our sins. We've "hardened our hearts" against hearing what He's telling us. These are metaphors, of course, as we're not literally deaf and our hearts aren't literally hard. But when we confess our sins, it "softens our hearts" and "opens our ears" so that we can hear the "still small voice" with which God often speaks.
If you've been seeking His voice, trying to see what He wants in your life, confessing your sins (with or without tears) is a good way to tune in to His signal.
God, thanks for accepting us every time we turn from our sins. Please help us hear Your voice.
