the joy of a happy dog

Lewis tells us about happy dogs today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.

And it's a great image. Most of us have seen the sheer joy that a dog experiences when it pleases its human. Dogs seem to really fully embrace the joy of loving another, don't they? When you come home and your dog acts like there is nothing greater in the world than to see you? How can we not love that?

That sensation... the total abandonment to the joy of another... is what Lewis is pointing us to today. When we truly DELIGHT in doing God's will. When it makes us happy to the core of our being to find the thing that He made us for, and DO IT.

Have you found that thing yet? Do you know what He's called you to do? If so, I rejoice with you that you are able to know His will for you, and to do it with all your might.

If not, then I encourage you to ask. Ask God to show you what He wants you to do. Of course He's going to answer that prayer. He wants you to do His will for you even more than you do. Not because He is a dictator who demands that you do His will "or else". But because He has given you gifts and desires that will only be fulfilled when you find His will for your life and do it. Your deepest satisfaction in life can only be found in doing the thing that God created you to do.

God, thank You for giving each of us a calling. Please help us find it and do it with all of our strength.
