stuck in a gerbil wheel

Lewis tells us about how we get stuck in a certain way of thinking today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.

He uses the word "democracy" to make his point. But we all do that, don't we? We get stuck in our little gerbil wheels of thinking, and go round and round without getting anywhere.

How can we break out? How can we stop thinking about that relationship that we know is only hurting us? How do we get out of our spinning whirls of worry and pointless fretting? How do we break free from the negative self-talk that we know only brings us down?

We ask. Jesus told us that if we ask, seek, and knock, He will give, be found, and open the door, respectively. Now, there are some prayers that He won't answer in the affirmative (God, give me a million dollars!) because, as Paul puts it, we would only "spend it on our passions." (That means we would just blow it.)

But THIS is a prayer that Jesus will answer. He desires greatly for us to break out of our little gerbil wheels and to follow Him in a powerful, life-changing, adventure producing way.

Just ask.

Jesus, please help me get out of my gerbil wheel.
