We live in the land of Facebook. We interact with people all of the time, every day, some of whom we've never met, through this amazing thing called the internet. And there are many ways in which that is a glorious, wonderful thing. You can learn how to cook an omelet and how to build an igloo, just by going online. (I learned both the same day)
But we also find people who disagree with us. How dare they?? We find stories about people who have a very different world view than we do. Who want to kill us, even. Hard to believe, but there really are people out there who would kill you if they had the chance, and do it gladly.
About 2000 years ago, Jesus told us what to do about those people. From reading the posts on Facebook by those who follow Jesus, you might not know what He said. Because we can be an angry bunch, can't we? And it's understandable why. The culture we live in is shifting before our eyes. The world hates us. Are we surprised? We shouldn't be. He told us not to be. And He told us what to do about them.
Love them. Pray for them.
Easy, right? Well, no. It's not easy. The only way to do it, I submit, is to stop focusing on the person who is your enemy. As long as you're focused on them, you will find it very difficult or even impossible to love them. But when you focus your eyes on Jesus, His love fills you to overflowing. And there is some left over to give to your enemies.
I'd like to follow up the "Easy?" question with an observation... it DOES make things simpler. If someone is my friend, my commandment is to love them. If someone is my family, my commandment is to love them. If someone is my enemy.... guess what?
Love them. Makes it simple, even if not easy.
God, fill us to overflowing with Your amazing love.
