your half formed dreams

Lewis delves deep in today's selection from A Year with C.S. Lewis.

He says that the times that we glimpse heaven, throughout our lives, are incredibly personal and make us long for our eternal home. And he's right, of course.

But it goes beyond that, I think. The half formed dreams and baby thoughts that we have, deep within us, where we're sometimes afraid to look ourselves, let alone share with others... those thoughts are like seeds planted deep in the soil of our being.

You might even be embarrassed that they're there. They're not fully developed. They're not ready to be examined by the general public. They're very private, very personal... and very precious.

These tiny little dreams can go unrealized in our lives if we're not careful. But the thing that we might not always grasp is that we can share them, just as they are, with God. He knows they're there already. And when we share them with Him, He shines His light on them, pours His rain on them, helps them to grow. We can share our little baby dreams with Him, without developing them first. Because He knows exactly what they need to develop and grow.

So the next time you find a little, half formed dream inside of you (or maybe go spelunking in your own soul, and search for them?) ... don't forget to share it with the one who gives us our dreams... and helps us realize them.

Lewis is right. These are foretastes of glory divine. But the Kingdom of Heaven doesn't begin when we die. It begins here and now, in this life. His kingdom come, His will be done... on earth as it is in Heaven. Right? So we can begin to see these dreams fulfilled in this lifetime... and come to complete fruition in the next.

Thank You, God, for not breaking the bruised reed.
