the human condition

Today, Lewis talks about the ups and downs in life in A Year with C.S. Lewis.

Through the voice of Screwtape, he tells us that God has created us as physical people who live in the corporal world and in the eternal world at the same time. And because of this, we find ourselves vacillating. One day we are flying high.. the next we're depressed. One day we love our job, the next we can't wait to leave. One day we love our family, the next they're driving us crazy. One day we are totally in love with our spouse... the next we want to kill them.

That's the human condition. We ride these waves. Lewis talks about the waves even more in his wonderful book Perelandra, in which he talks about people who want to stop the waves and have more control over their lives. But God has created the waves. He wants us to ride the waves... with Him.

It's not always easy or fun to ride the waves. Sometimes they're scary. But we are walking these waves with the One who walked on TOP of the waves, and who is able to help us through every wave to know Him better. He never leaves us. He's with us in every up and down.

When we learn to trust Him with the downs as well as the ups, our spiritual lives take a turn. We find out that He's OK with us getting mad at Him, or feeling hurt by Him. And He takes us to a deeper level, where He shows us the meaning behind it all. Or sometimes He doesn't show us, He just says "Trust me". And we learn that we can.

Thank You, God, for making the waves... and for being with us through all of them.

Riding the waves can and is scary if you ride alone. Riding them with God can and is exciting and a terrific adventure
