He says that we don't have bad impulses - there's no such thing - but that we have to make sure we're following the right impulse at the right time. And fortunately, Lewis would agree, we have the Holy Spirit to help us determine which impulse we should follow in a given circumstance (though it's usually pretty clear).
He brings up the keys on a piano, and tells us that at one time or another they're all the right ones. Which brings to mind Solomon's advice from Ecclesiastes - a time for this and a time for that.
How does that come home to our lives today, though? Well, I don't know about you, but there are times when someone will recommend a book to me, and I just can't get into it. I try to read it, but it rides my shelf for months... even years. Then one day, I suddenly want to read it. And it plugs perfectly into my situation in life and helps me understand what's happening.
This doesn't just happen with books. It happens with jobs, relationships, music... and even romance. Sure, we would all like to have wonderful romantic relationships every day. But wisdom tells us to wait... until the right one comes along. That waiting can be tough... believe me! But it's so worth it when it works out. And those notes begin to play on our piano.
God, thank You for orchestrating such beautiful music in our lives.

Was reading a devotional this morning and will admit I was guilty of blazing through it when I came to this analogy about rest. In music a rest is important. Why? Because, what comes after the rest is often the most beautiful. It is valuable preparation for what is to come. Just as the Father is leading you to rest in Him, take this perspective as He prepares you for the most beautiful music to come in your song.
Just what. I needed to read today as right now it seems that our lives are spinning at a very rapid rate.
