when love hurts

Today's readings: Daniel 4:1-37, 2 Peter 1:1-21, Psalm 119:97-112, Proverbs 28:17-18

When you read today's OT reading, it might seem that God is punishing the king. He gives Daniel the meaning of the king's dream, and it frightens Daniel. But when you look at the big picture, from God's perspective, God is actually loving the king.

The king lives in luxury. He has everything he needs. And because of this, he has become proud. God loves him, though, and wants him to be humble and good. So he gives him the mind of a beast. He causes the king to live like an animal for a time. That's humbling, but it's not that bad, is it? I mean, it's embarrassing... but not lasting harm done. The king learns his lesson and turns to God.

Sometimes God gets our attention that way. He sends us a lesson that is humbling. Maybe a little embarrassing. But it's because He loves us and wants us to be humble and good, and to let go of the pride that hurts us.

Thank You for loving us, God, even when it hurts.
