when it doesn't make sense (like in Paris today)

Today’s readings: Ezekiel 27:1-28:26, Hebrews 11:17-31, Psalm 111:1-10, Proverbs 27:15-16

A remarkable verse is found in today’s reading. But before we get to it, the OT reading was interesting today, wasn’t it? Reading about what a powerful nation Tyre was, a great hub of commerce on the sea. And this great wealth and success lead to its pride and downfall. That’s the temptation we all face, from time to time. When things are going well and the resources are pouring in, it’s easy to trust in the resources instead of trusting in God. Hebrews talks about this decision when it mentions Moses. It points out that he chose to trust God’s promise and throw his lot in with the Hebrews rather than trust in the sizable wealth of Egypt.

The remarkable verse I referred to is the one that says that “he kept his eyes fixed on the one who is invisible.” That’s a bit of a paradox, right? Fixing your sight on someone who can’t be seen. But that’s what faith is. Trusting in God even when nothing seems to make sense. When you’re looking for a job and it just doesn’t seem to be appearing. When the girl you love runs off on you, again and again. When happiness seems to slip through your fingers as soon as you feel it in your hand. When your body doesn’t work like it used to… or when it starts to fall apart and give you daily pain. When terrorists kill dozens of people in Paris without warning. That’s when our faith enables us to press on. To trust that God will take care of us. To know that even though things look dismal, there is a future so bright that its rays shine into our present, giving us hope that there is light at the end of even the darkest tunnel.

God, thank You for being the invisible One that we can fix our eyes on.
