We read about fat cats today. Psalm 73:7 says "These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish for." Does that sound familiar?
It reminds me of this country I know... where people have so much to eat that obesity is a serious problem. Where they are blessed with so many children that they begin to see them as a burden and get rid of them. Where they have so much wealth they begin to rely on themselves and their riches, and forget about God.
Which brings up the issue of money. The Bible does not say that money is the root of all evil. It DOES say that the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). And we see a rich young ruler choose his wealth over being perfect by following Jesus.
But.
We also see Nicodemus using his wealth to give Jesus a proper burial (which He only needed temporarily, as will we). We see Abraham becoming incredibly wealthy and the father of many nations, blessed by God. We see Job given great wealth as a reward for his faithfulness.
So money itself isn't a bad thing. That last word is the key. It's a THING. And things are not good or evil. Things are just things. What we do with them... and, more importantly, our intent behind what we do with them... is what is good or evil.
If we have billions of dollars and we use it to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, comfort the hurting, visit those in prison and in the hospital... then we're doing it right.
If we only have $10 to our name, but we waste it on "our pleasures", as the Bible euphemistically puts it (and it doesn't really matter much what "our pleasure" is... it's the selfishness that is the issue here.), then we're doing it wrong (and I'm as guilty of this as the next guy).
To whom much is given, much is expected.
God, please help us fat cats learn to use what we have, whether little or much, to help your children.
