the kingdom of God

today's readings: Deut 5:1-6:25, Luke 7:11-35, Psalm 68:19-35, Proverbs 11:29-31

so in today's Gospel, we see something that used to puzzle me, but now it makes perfect sense (i think). when John heard was Jesus was doing, he sent his disciples to ask Him if He was the Messiah they had been waiting for. instead of just saying "yes", Jesus said "go tell him what you see here... the lame walk, the blind see..."

that used to make me think "why didn't He just say 'yes'?" but then it finally (after years of reading this passage) occurred to me... when He was healing people and performing miracles, He was proclaiming the Kingdom of God. He was announcing to the world that it was about to be changed forever. He was bringing the Kingdom of Heaven to earth.

see, when we start walking with God, we don't just look forward to being in the Kingdom of Heaven "one day". that's why I chose the pic above for today's blog. the Kingdom of Heaven is here and now. it is among us. we are currently living in it. it will continue forever, yes. and it will be more manifest after we die... but we're in it now.

when John asked if Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus said "this is what I've been doing... I've been proclaiming, through all of these signs and wonders, that I am indeed the Messiah and the Kingdom of Heaven is here."

God, may your Kingdom come, and your will be done, on earth (and in my life) as it is in Heaven.
