messers

today's reading is from Genesis 28:1 - 29:35, Matthew 9:18-38, Psalm 11:1-7, Proverbs 3:11-12

apparently, if you want to find your spouse, you should hang out at the local watering hole. that seems to be the theme from the past couple days' readings. anyone know where the nearest well is?

Jacob gets upset this week because he gets duped by Laban. this seems... oh, a little hypocritical to me? doesn't Jacob's NAME mean deceiver? (among other things, "laughter" being another one, "grasper" being another) and didn't he JUST pull a fast one over on his dad? so I don't think Jacob has much room to complain here. and, to be fair, he doesn't seem to complain much. and Laban actually does do him right eventually... giving him Rachel before he even worked the second 7 years. that's not how I remember this story. it surprised me when Laban gave him Rachel before he started the next set of 7 years.

also in today's reading, Jacob becomes the next person to be spoken to in a dream. I never noticed before how many people in the Bible are spoken to in dreams. it's pretty clear that this is one of the chief ways that God speaks to us. it almost makes you want to pray that He will speak to you in your dreams tonight. it's kind of exciting when He does... but kinda scary too, right? what if He asks you to DO something? what if it's hard? I guess that's where trusting God becomes so important. speak, Lord. Your servant is listening.

Instead of looking for a watering hole, do what Adam did: healthy relationship with God, following his calling, working on his assignment, and God brought him a helper.

I find it humorous that like Jeff has stated, our versions of how our history began is so much nicer than the facts as we read them now. Isn't it amazing that when I reflect on the OT characters, I have a tendency to gloss over their shortcomings, these were not little mistakes towards God and humanity, they were self centered ambititious deceitful individuals......hummmmm....any difference to us, Lord hear my cries and search my soul, place in me a new heart and give me love for all sinners such as me.
