Jesus is forever

Today we read these verses in the One Year Bible:

1 Samuel 18:5-19:24
John 8:31-59
Psalm 112:1-10
Proverbs 15:12-14

In John, we see Jesus make a very bold and shocking statement about Himself. He tells the religious leaders that, "Before Abraham was, I am!" As a writer of time travel books, I recognize this strange verb tense. Jesus is saying that He has existed forever. There was not a time before He was, and there won't be a time after Him.

That can be surprising when we think of Jesus being born in Bethlehem. How can Jesus be eternal if He was born? Didn't He start His existence when He was born? Unlike all other humans who ever lived, Jesus preexisted His birth. He was there when the world was created - in fact, He created it.

With Jesus having lived forever, I think it's safe to say we can trust what He says, right? In fact, in today's reading He says that if we obey His words, we will never see death.

God, thanks for teaching us that Jesus is forever - and that we can totally trust Him.
