focus on what's important

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Deuteronomy 26:1-27:26
Luke 10:38-11:13
Psalm 76:1-12
Proverbs 12:15-17

Let's look at Luke. Jesus is at Mary and Martha's house. Mary is sitting by Jesus and listening to His teaching. Martha is bustling about the house taking care of everyone. Martha is, understandably, upset that Mary isn't helping her. She tells Jesus to tell Mary to help her.

Jesus's answer is very illuminating (which isn't a big surprise). He says, "Martha, Martha (notice the love in this repetition), you are worried and anxious about many things. Mary has chosen the one important thing, and it won't be taken from her."

This doesn't mean that we shouldn't take care of our guests. It doesn't mean that we should kneel in prayer all day and neglect our responsibilities. It DOES mean that we shouldn't be "worried and anxious about many things". And that we SHOULD learn to put Jesus first in our lives and in everything we do.

God, thanks for teaching us to learn to focus on what's most important: You.
