God Teaches Through Harry Potter: One Year Bible Readings from January 17

So today we read from the following passages in the One Year Bible:

Genesis 35:1-36:43
Matthew 12:1-21
Psalm 15:1-5
Proverbs 3:21-26

And the verse that jumped out at me reminded me of something God showed me today. The verse is from Psalm 15:4 "Whoever keeps an oath, even when it hurts." That's the proverbial proof in the pudding, isn't it? It's not hard to keep our promises when they cost us nothing. But when it means giving up something that we like or is important to us, that's when our promises really count. And that goes for trust, too!

See, today I was watching a Harry Potter movie. Dumbledore is keeping information from Harry, and he's avoiding him. Of course WE know (in our dramatic irony) that he's doing it for Harry's own good. That he's got his best interests at heart. And Harry SHOULD know this, but he lets his feelings get in the way and he gets mad.

How much MORE should we know that God has OUR best interests at heart? When things seem hard, and it seems like forever that we've been waiting for Him to answer our prayer... we need to trust God the same way Harry should have trusted Dumbledore. And like the Psalmist said, it counts most when it hurts!

God, thanks for teaching us to trust You, even by using Harry Potter.
