A Little Yeast: One Year Bible Reading for January 31

Today we read from the following passages in the One Year Bible:

Exodus 12:14-13:16
Matthew 20:29-21:22
Psalm 25:16-22
Proverbs 6:12-15

And today I wanted to talk about yeast. Moses warns us against using yeast in their food on certain days. And in the New Testament, Jesus tells us that we should avoid the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees. And today we see the results of all kinds of yeast in the world. Lies on top of lies. Bad teaching that causes so many people to live empty lives. The suicide rate skyrocketing. All because of the yeast of bad ideas.

But the good news is that even though it only takes a little yeast (bad ideas) to leaven a whole lump (the world), it also only takes a little kindness and joy to change the world back to good again. There are so many stories of people who were planning to take their own lives after months or even years of depression, and then one person says something kind to them and their whole life turns around.

Can you be that little bit of joy in someone's life today? Together, we can unleaven those lumps.

God, thanks for teaching us about the good and bad effects of our actions.
