St Peter Canisius: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us"

Today we celebrate a great Jesuit saint. Peter Canisius lived during the tumultuous times of the Reformation. He experienced the spiritual exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola under the direction of St. Peter Faber and joined the Jesuits. He wrote extensively, founded a college where German Catholic theology was taught, and worked to strengthen the Catholic church in a time when many were leaving and joining Protestant groups.

He also worked to increase devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is credited for adding, "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us" to the Rosary. He was later proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. You can read more about him here.

Many are leaving the Church today, too. How is God calling YOU to help strengthen the Church in this time of need?

God, thanks for the example of this wonderful Jesuit priest. St Peter Canisius, pray for us.
