St Mother Theodora Guerin: Mary in the Woods

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Mother Theodora Guerin. She was born in France and her father and brothers died when she was very young. She helped take care of her mother and sisters until she entered the convent. She then felt God calling her to do mission work in America, so she moved to Indiana in the 19th century. She found herself in the middle of the woods and in bad health. But she pressed on, founded a school, and suffered excommunication from a local bishop when she insisted that he not boss her nuns around. He then resigned and the following bishop reinstated her. The school and congregation she founded was called Saint Mary-in-the-Woods. You can read more about her here.

You can tell she was a nun with a fiery spirit. She overcame the obstacles that life threw at her with an unwavering faith in God. We can learn from her strength to face the hardships that life throws our way.

God, thanks for the example of this fiery nun. St Mother Theodora Guerin, pray for us.
