St Elizabeth of Portugal: She Served in Suffering

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Elizabeth of Portugal. She was the queen of Portugal! So you'd think her life would be cushy and pleasant, right? Wrong.

She married King Dinis of Portugal when she was only 12 years old. That injustice was the beginning of many. Her husband, the king, liked women and had children with many of them, insisting that Queen Elizabeth take care of them. In her humility and trying to serve Jesus in those less fortunate, she did in fact take care of them.

In her later days, she lived as a Franciscan tertiary at a monastery that she founded. You can read more about her here.

She was quoted as saying, "Who can I lean on except for God?" Have you felt that way? That the only person you can trust is Jesus? If so, you're in good company. Even though everyone else might fail you, He never will.

God, thanks for the great and humble example of this holy queen. St Elizabeth of Portugal, pray for us.
