St Bonaventure: A Mind Journeying to God - and Taking us With Him

Today we read about St Bonaventure in the book In Caelo et in Terra. He begins his great work The Journey of the Mind to God with this sentence: "As I begin, I call upon the First Beginning: the Father of Lights from whom all illumination descends, from whom every good gift and every perfect gift derives."

This was an amazing saint, who is called the Seraphic Doctor because of his deep and profound insights that he taught the church during his lifetime. He joined the Franciscans and then, along with St Thomas Aquinas, became a professor of theology at the University of Paris. I really wish I could travel through time and sit in on their classes.

He was made bishop and cardinal of Albano, and when they came to bring him the red hat associated with the position, he was washing dishes. So he asked them to hang the hat on a nearby bush.

That's what humility looks like.

You can read more about him here. And you can purchase The Journey of the Mind to God on Amazon for only $2.99. I know what I'll be reading this week.

God, thanks for the heart and mind so close to You that we find in this wonderful teacher. St Bonaventure, pray for us.
