St Mark: A Synopsis of the Christian Life

Today we read about St Mark in the book In Caelo et in Terra. And it turns out that St Mark is both the apostle AND the evangelist. I was finding websites for St Mark the Apostle and others for St Mark the Evangelist and at first I was wondering if there were two Marks but it turns out they're the same person.

There are many traditions surrounding Mark, and they lead us to see him as a little picture of all of our lives as Christians. One tradition is that the last supper was held at his family's house. So you see us learning our faith from our family. But then another tradition says that when Judas comes to arrest Jesus, Mark runs to warn Him. Our fervor becomes personal.

Then after the death and resurrection of Jesus, Mark goes on a missionary trip, but it's harder than he realized it was going to be and he goes home. But then later he goes, according to tradition, to Alexandria, Egypt and founds a church there, where he is later martyred.

We all fail from time to time, right? None of us are perfect Christians from day one. Mark stumbled and messed up. But he finished strong, as a church founder and martyr. You can read more about him here.

God, thanks for giving us this example to look to. St Mark, pray for us.
