Today we read about a really cool saint in the book In Caelo et in Terra. His name was Casimir, and he was the third of thirteen children. His father was the king of Poland! He sent Casimir to battle, and Casimir saw that it was more prudent in the situation to retreat than to attack and lose many lives, even if it were to gain him fame and glory. His father was disgusted with his action, and exiled him to a castle in Dobzki. And you KNOW how winters can be so drafty in Dobzki. Just kidding, no one knows that.
But Casimir then went on to take a vow of celibacy, and he delighted in giving away his wealth and possessions to the poor. You might remember that this is EXACTLY what Jesus said the rich young ruler should do to be perfect. Sounds like Casimir was pretty close to perfect. He had a very strong devotion to Jesus and to our Lady Mary. He assisted often at mass, and would often return to the church at night and worship Jesus while kneeling at the front door. He died at the very young age of 26 of tuberculosis. You can read more about him here.
You can see why I called him God's knight. He was devoted to the Lady, and he led his men into battle and then protected them there.
God, thanks for the inspiring example of this young man who really got it right. St Casimir, pray for us.
