Saint Agnes of Bohemia: With God All Things Are Possible

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about a truly remarkable saint. Jesus once said that it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. This astonished the disciples, who asked, "Then who can be saved?" And Jesus replied, "With God all things are possible."

Agnes was born into a very wealthy family in Bohemia. She was literally a princess, and her King father and Queen mother tried very hard to arrange her marriage. But she obtained permission from the Pope to remain single. Then she found out about the poor sisters of saint Clare and surprised everyone by building a convent and a hospital for them.

Then she shocked the whole world by renouncing her riches and joining the order. She lived a life of austerity, extreme poverty, and dedication to the poor. She was that amazing camel that went through the eye of the needle. You can read more about her here.

In light of so much dedication, love, and sacrifice... what is God calling you to give up today? Can you spare a few minutes, at least, to pray for the poor? Maybe forgo a cup of Starbucks so you can give a little more change to the homeless? Maybe even give up a Saturday afternoon to help out in a soup kitchen? Open your heart and see what happens.

God, thanks for the wonderful example of this princess who spurned her title and her riches to invest in what really matters for all eternity. St Agnes of Bohemia, pray for us.
