St Joseph Vaz: Fearless with a King

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Joseph Vaz. He was born in India to poor parents, but was a brilliant young man who spoke Latin and Portuguese and studied philosophy along with theology. You can read more about him here.

He had a heart for missions, and traveled to Ceylon, which is now known as Sri Lanka. This area was owned by the Dutch, who did not like Catholic missionaries. They persecuted him, and he was eventually imprisoned. But he won over the favor of the local king (much like a certain Joseph did in the Old Testament) and was able to minister to the needs of the people until his death.

Today we face intolerance both in the US and throughout the world. Is God calling you to minister to people in other countries? St Joseph Vaz supported himself by begging so that he could minister to people's needs? What might God be calling YOU to do?

God, thank You for the fantastic example of this very interesting saint. St Joseph Vaz, pray for us.
