Today we read from In Caelo et in Terra, a beautiful book that brings us the life of a saint each day. Today we read about St Gregory Nazianzen. Every member of Gregory's family was a saint. His father was St Gregory the Elder. The lesson we've learned so far this year is that if you share the name of your father, who's a saint, and most of your family are saints, then you'll be a saint too.
But seriously... almost everyone in Gregory's life was a saint. In fact, he was friends with the saint from yesterday, Basil of Caesarea. AND he was friends with Basil's brother, Gregory of Nyssa, who taught that all men would eventually be saved. We'll talk about him another time.
Saint Gregory was a doctor of the church! There are only 36 doctors of the church, and here is some info on them. He was influential on the Nicene creed. He played a very large role in forming the Catholic church as it is today.
And he was a shy, introverted person. But he didn't let his shyness keep him from doing what God called him to. He taught well, and studied well, and helped to teach the church the truth about the trinity.
Let's strive to be like Gregory. Let's surround ourselves with people who will help us strive for sainthood. And let's not allow our natural weaknesses to prevent us from doing God's will.
God, thanks for the great example of St Gregory Nazianzen.
