Today we begin a new chapter. Today is January 1, 2021, and we are all hoping that this begins a new year that is as good as 2020 was bad.
We begin this new year by reading a new book. This year we're spending each day with a saint. Today we read about St Basil the Great. Here is his wiki page if you'd like to learn the details of his life.
Tomorrow (Jan 2) is his feast day, but he died on January 1. The feast today is of Mary, Mother of God. But today we'll focus on Basil.
He became a bishop after refuting Arianism. He was a hermit for many years. But the take home lesson, I think, ties into our reading from yesterday. He came from a holy family. Both of his parents are saints, as are three of his siblings! This reminds me of St Therese of Liseux, whose parents were recently canonized as saints. When your family is holy, it tends to help you become a saint!
And that's our main purpose in life. To become saints. Yesterday we talked about how the way you can change the world is to go home and love your family. And when you love them, and love them the right way, you're helping them to become saints. That's the whole point of marriage and family: to make saints!
So love your family. Spend time in prayer. Listen to this if you have time. Pray for your family - you might all end up as saints!
God, thanks for calling us to holy families.
