Today we read from Amos 1:1-3:15 in the One Year Bible. God is warning the nations, one at a time, before "the earthquake" comes. There was a disaster on its way, and God was trying to prepare people so that they wouldn't regret their lives when the disaster was upon them.
There is a disaster on its way today, too. Of course, there will come the end times, and maybe that's tomorrow, I don't know. The Bible makes it very clear that we CANNOT KNOW when the end is coming. So if someone tells you they know... well, they're mistaken.
But we DO know that it's coming. Whether it comes 3000 years from now or next year, it will come eventually. However, each of us have an end coming much sooner than that. You and I have at MOST another 80 years before our lives will be over and we will face our judgment. (If you're 20 years old reading this, you could conceivably live to 100.)
Are you ready? Are you living your life in such a way that when the end comes, you'll be ready to face God? If not, now's the time to listen to Amos's advice and get things straight. I know I've got some house cleaning to do.
God, thanks for warning us. Help us get ready.
